In statement, South Korea's foreign ministry said said Son returned home on March 25.

Son had been held by Chinese authorities since May 2023 over bribery allegations. 

However, it was not clear if the charges against him were proven.

Son played for the Shandong Taishan football club in the Chinese Super League.

The midfielder also appeared in 3 of South Korea's 4 matches during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Chinese football has struggled for years to shed the image of widespread corruption in the sector.

State media aired a high-profile anti- corruption documentary series in December 2023.

In it, the former head of China`s top football body admitted corruption was rife in the sport.

Chen Xuyuan was charged with bribery in September 2023.
