More than 20 young women in India are pursuing their dream of winning medals in wrestling, a male-dominated sport considered taboo for women in many parts of the country. They have been training at the Altius wrestling school, in the northern Indian state of Haryana. Founded by Usha Sharma, a police officer, and her husband in 2009, the school has been providing a safe space for female wrestlers aged 8 to 22, while delivering rare lessons in female empowerment.

These girls are reaching for their wrestling dreams.
The largely male dominated sport in India is considered taboo for women.
But the Altius school offers a safe space for female wrestlers aged 8 to 22.
The sky's the limit for these girls who are not afraid to aim high.
Swati Berwal: For now, I aspire to become an international player,Initially I dreamed of becoming a national player,but since I started nearing that target, I realsed that being an international palyer is possible too My dream is to win medals and get international recognition.
Usha Sharma and her husband Sanjay Sihag founded Altius school in 2009.
Sharma is a police officer whie Sihag is a gym teacher.
The school is located in the village of Sisai, a 3- hour drive from the capital New Delhi.
More than 20 girls and young women have been training here.
For some students, the school has changed their lives.
Sonu Kalirama: It is a good thing if a girl's family supports her and she should come forward and join the sport.
She shoulkd know it all. Here, girls learn everything in just a few days and become mature.
Life changes completle after joining the sport. The life of a normal girl is very different from that of a sports player.
Almost all of the girls sport pageboy cutsto prevebt hair pulling by opponents.
In school, they built a strong sense of sisterhood.
The school founders believe that sports can fuel student's aspirations and build their confidence.
They started the school to fight conservative attitudes towards women's rights.
Girls receive rare lessons in female empowerment during their training.
Sonu Kalirama: They have taught us showed us what life actually is.We were naive. Had it not een for them, we would not be here in the sports domain, we would have been married off long ago and would be raising children right now.
Becuase of them , we have been able to put a badge of honour to their names, our names and even our families' names. We have earned money as well.
Besides earning prize money competing at the state level can also bring government jobs.
Sharma is proud to see her students carying out careers.
Usha Sharma: It feel nice to see that the same girls whou used to graze cows and buffalo, about whom no one cared, there are noow four, five people behind them.
Their uncles , grandfathers are asking about them.
Seven,eight girls from our academy are working is government jobs.One has become a police sub-inspector after begging a medal in the Commonwealth Games.Her name is Pooja Sihag. So, it does feel nice after giving back to society.
Indian female athletes came away with 3 bronze medals at the 2023 Asian Games in China.
