Transcription:
This herd of wild elephants really needed this rest after a long walk.
The baby elephant slept in the center while the others surrounded it.
It was the first time they were spotted napping all together, sine authorities began
monitoring them 12 days before. The herd of 15 had traveled around 500km from
their forest home. 1 broke off and was located 4 km away from the group.
Chen Fei: It won't be alone for long. It will soon reunite with the group. We'll keep
tracking the elephant as it may break into a village for food.
They are now roaming
the outskirts of a majoy Yunnan city, that is home to more than 8 million people.
Hundreds of people and tonnes of food were deployed and used to monitor and
guide the herd's migration.
Chen Fei: If the elephants starts to move quickly,
we will immediately respond to it. If they approach a village, we will give early
warning to evacuate villagers. If they continue to migate northward, we will take
measures to stop their movements or use food to divert them.
They started their
journey in mid-April. They were spotted marching on a main road breaking into
villagers' houses., and stealing food and water from shops.
Resident: If they
cause too much damage we should also consider other strategies.
We can protect them in some designated areas.
